Catching up on some neat statistical stuff you may not have caught last week:
♦ Kyle Kendrick Sunday pitched into the eighth inning for the 10th time in 115 career starts.
♦ Sunday, Jimmy Rollins took a big collar (0-for-5 or 0-for-6) for the 100th time in his career. Somehow, the Phillies are 50-50 in those games.
♦ Placido Polanco is major league baseball's all-time fielding percentage leader at third base. (More on that on the blog later this week.)
♦ When we put up our list of 1-0 regular season games won on a solo homer by the Phillies, we mentioned how odd that Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton never combined to do that. Turns out, they did — in the 1983 NLCS opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles.
♦ After seeing our list of the 53 players that have started at shortstop for the Phillies since Larry Bowa made his MLB debut in the 1970 season opener, an emailer asked which major-leaguers had started the games at short in that time period.
And the answer is ... Omar Vizquel (a little over 2,600).
Derek Jeter and Ozzie Smith are second third (each a little under 2,500). Cal Ripken Jr., who moved to third base his last few seasons was fourth and Bowa (including his time with the Cubs and Mets) was fifth.
♦ The major league record for consecutive games homering vs. an opponent is 9, done by the Braves' Joe Adcock vs. Dodgers (1956) and the Twins' Harmon Killebrew vs. Athletics (1961).
♦ Saturday, the Dodgers had four hits ... all homers. It was the third time this season a team had four or more hits that were all dingers. It had happened a total of four times in the 94 seasons prior (1918-2011).
♦ ESPN Stats & Info points out that the Red Sox are now 0-13 on Ben Affleck's birthday since the release of Good Will Hunting in 1997.
