Phillies acquire infielder John McDonald from Cleveland

The Phillies have acquired infielder John McDonald from the Cleveland Indians for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

To make room on the 40-man roster, the Phillies outrighted catcher Steven Lerud to triple-A Lehigh Valley. No move has been made on the 25-man roster, but one is expected when McDonald joins the team Friday in Los Angeles.

The Inquirer's Matt Gelb calls the move "curious" as the Phillies already solid infield depth in Freddy Galvis and Kevin Frandsen, but moving Galvis to triple-A would allow him to see regular playing time.

Ryan Lawrence of the Daily News agrees that Galvis needs to get more at-bats, something that clearly isn't happening at the major-league level:

During his 14 year career, McDonald has played for five teams prior to joining the Phillies, including seven each seasons with the Indians and Pirates.

In 24 games in 2013 (Pirates and Indians), the 38-year-old utility infielder has just two hits in 38 at-bats (.053 BA). In 2012, he hit .249 in 197 at-bats with the Diamondbacks.

A right-handed hitter, McDonald isn't known for his prowess at the plate, but rather his glove.

Over his career, McDonald has made just 81 errors in 2042 attempts, good for a .974 fielding percentage.
