Villanova's Reid on Canadian Olympic team

VILLANOVA track athlete Sheila Reid will represent Canada in the Summer Olympics.

Reid, of Newmarket, Ontario, completed her Villanova career in the spring. She will compete in the 5,000 meters.

At Villanova, she was a five-time individual national champion, 12-time All-America and 12-time Big East champion.

Reid's entry into the Olympics was intriguing. She won the Olympic Trials on June 30 in Calgary, but her time of 16 minutes, 15 seconds wasn't fast enough to qualify under the "A" standard. Reid had two times that were "B" standard and an appeals process landed her in the Games.

"I'm relieved and excited," Reid said. "This season has been more challenging than ones in the past. I had my collegiate obligations while also trying to satisfy the Olympic standards. I feel like it would be hard to have everything and I was very disappointed in my collegiate season. This is nice way to kind of sum everything up, to know that all the hard work I did before this wasn't for nothing."

Reid is the Wildcats' fifth representative at the 2012 Summer Games. Former track athletes Marina Muncan (Serbia) and Adrian Blincoe (New Zealand) will be in London along with former basketball players Lisa Karcic (Croatia) and Andrew Sullivan (Great Britain). Villanova has been represented at every Summer Olympics since 1948.
