Eagles Notes: Linebacker Acho exits with groin injury

Emmanuel Acho left the Eagles' 43-24 win over the Tennessee Titans in the second quarter with a groin injury and did not return. Acho has been splitting inside linebacker duties with Casey Matthews in the team's effort to compensate for the loss of DeMeco Ryans.

Emmanuel Acho left the Eagles' 43-24 win over the Tennessee Titans in the second quarter with a groin injury and did not return. Acho has been splitting inside linebacker duties with Casey Matthews in the team's effort to compensate for the loss of DeMeco Ryans.

Coach Chip Kelly did not have an update on Acho's status after the game. The Eagles have only three days before Thursday's game against the Dallas Cowboys.

"I know Acho was out of the game, so we'll see how that goes," Kelly said.

Acho was in coverage when Titans tight end Delanie Walker caught a 68-yard pass down the seam. After Acho exited, Matthews filled the role on a full-time basis. First-round pick Marcus Smith is the only other inside linebacker.

"I think I'm conditioned enough for it, but [it's] just a bigger role," Matthews said.

Tight end Zach Ertz suffered an oblique injury, but he returned to the game. Wide receiver Brad Smith was on the turf for more than a minute after getting the wind knocked out of him in the first quarter, but he also returned to play.

Gardner steps in

Andrew Gardner started at right guard in place of Matt Tobin, who missed two practices leading up to the game while recovering from a concussion. Tobin was active and filled a reserve role. It was Gardner's first start since he was the right tackle in Weeks 2 and 3. The Eagles started their seventh offensive line combination this season.

"Overall, I'm pleased," Gardner said. "There's definitely things I want to clean up. . . . But right now, my reaction is overall to feel good about it."

Gardner did not find out he would start until Friday. The veteran played guard in the preseason but has mostly played tackle this season. He said he felt more comfortable this time than when he entered the lineup in Week 2.

"I think it was really good for me early in the year to be thrust in, back in the lineup," Gardner said. "And I think if I do continue to play, I'll feel more comfortable as the year goes on."

The Eagles' inactive players were quarterback Nick Foles, cornerback Roc Carmichael, defensive back Jaylen Watkins, offensive linemen Julian Vandervelde and Dennis Kelly, wide receiver Jeff Maehl, and defensive end Taylor Hart.

Extra points

The Eagles have won 10 straight regular-season games at Lincoln Financial Field after losing 10 straight at home. . . . Cornerback Brandon Boykin recorded his first interception of the season.
