Daniel Adam Schultz, 38; civil engineer was active in sports

Daniel Adam Schultz, 38, of Rosemont, a civil engineer, sportsman, and father of four, died at home Friday, June 22, after a 23-month battle with sarcoma.

Since 1998, Mr. Schultz had been with ASTM International. The not-for-profit organization develops standards for metals, paints, plastics, medical devices, electronics, and other industries, and for consumer products.

Mr. Schultz had been involved in ASTM projects in several countries and in 2005 spent 10 days in South Korea and Japan at meetings involving standardization issues in the areas of medical devices and aviation.

"The staff and volunteer members of ASTM International are privileged to have worked with Dan," said ASTM president James A. Thomas. "He played an integral part in our mission as a standards developer, and he was a friend to many of his colleagues."

At the time of his death, he was director of standards development. He kept up a busy schedule even while undergoing cancer treatments and worked until the end of May, his wife, Susan Quinn Schultz, said.

He was upbeat and never complained, she said, and was always gracious to his caregivers.

Mr. Schultz grew up in Mayo, Md., and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Annapolis, where he was a member of the soccer and wrestling teams.

In 1996, he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Villanova University. He and his wife, who is also a civil engineer, met at Villanova as freshmen and married in 1998. A daughter was born in 2002 and triplets were born in 2005.

Mr. Schultz coached T-ball and youth basketball and soccer. He played rugby as a club sport at Villanova and later played on an amateur softball team. He worked out at a gym regularly, and loved boating and waterskiing with family and friends on the Rhode River in Maryland, his wife said.

"He was the epitome of a nice guy," his wife said. "He never put anyone down. He had a sense of humor, but not at the expense of others."

In addition to his wife, Mr. Schultz is survived by daughters Madelyn, Avery, and Sadie; a son, Quinn; his mother, Verna Hanes; his father and stepmother, Warren and Donna Schultz; and two sisters.

Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, July 1, and on Monday, July 2, from 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11, at St. Thomas of Villanova Church on the Villanova University campus. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
