Youth soccer tournament at PPL Park

CHESTER Soccer for Success is holding a Play Day in Chester.

About 140 third and fourth graders from the Chester Upland after-school youth development program are scheduled to play in a round-robin soccer tournament Tuesday.

The event will be held between 3:30 and 5 p.m. on the plaza outside PPL Park.

The health program is a collaboration among Widener University, the Union pro soccer team, Crozer Chester Health System, and other groups.

Widener received a $200,000 grant from the U.S. Soccer Foundation to operate Soccer for Success for two years. The program has expanded from 350 students at three area schools to about 500 students at seven schools.

Seventy-two percent of the students who participated in the program last year improved or maintained their body mass index profile over the course of the program. Fifty-seven percent improved or maintained their aerobic capacity, and 68 percent decreased or maintained their waist circumference.
