Parents report deaths of two sleeping infants

Police are investigating reports that two babies died in their sleep yesterday morning within about an hour of each other in separate parts of the city.

Medics were called to the Visitation Home, a shelter for battered women and their children in the 2600 block of Kensington Avenue, after a year-old girl was found about 7 a.m. lying face-down and unresponsive in her crib, police said. The mother noticed the baby's condition upon waking.

In the other death, the parents of a 10-week-old boy who was unresponsive and sleeping in their bed called medics to their home on South 82d Street in the southwest section of the city. The boy was pronounced dead at 8:12 a.m. at Children's Hospital.

Police said the causes of the deaths had not yet been determined and the investigations continue.- Jan Hefler
