Former Shirt Corner collapses during demolition work

A building being dismantled in Old City fully collapsed Thursday afternoon before demolition could be completed.

Fire officials said the storefront that formerly housed the Shirt Corner, near Third and Market streets, crumbled around 1:20 p.m.

No injuries were reported, and the scene was declared under control several minutes later.

The building, home to the Shirt Corner until 2009, was slated to be redeveloped until engineers earlier this year uncovered cracks in the walls and other structural problems.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections in late January ordered the building be demolished. The work was slated to begin last month.

It's not yet clear exactly how much of the building had already been taken down prior to the collapse.
