2 homicides bring total in city to 95

HOMICIDE DETECTIVES had their hands full yesterday as two more homicides brought the total to 95, compared with 73 on the same date last year.

Cops said a 29-year-old man was shot to death shortly after 3 a.m. on Jerome Street near Old York Road in Hunting Park.

The unidentified man was rushed to Temple University Hospital suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. He was pronounced dead about 4 a.m.

The second homicide happened shortly after 1:15 yesterday afternoon in West Oak Lane.

Homicide investigators said an 18-year-old man was gunned down in the parking lot of a McDonald's on Stenton Avenue near Haines Street.

"Right now we have a single shooter fleeing the scene on a bike," said homicide Sgt. Tim Cooney.

Meanwhile yesterday, police identified the woman who was gunned down Sunday afternoon outside her Southwest Philadelphia home as 28-year-old Jovonne Stelly. They called her an innocent bystander.

Homicide detectives believe that Stelly's death resulted from an argument, but were still trying to piece together the chain of events that led to her death.

"So far, we know that five guns were used in the shootout but no guns were recovered," said homicide Sgt. Anthony McFadden. "She was an innocent bystander."

Police Commissioner Sylvester Johnson said, "The lady lost her life out there and she wasn't even involved in any of it."

About 1:30 p.m. yesterday, investigators in South Philadelphia were called to the scene of a shooting on Fernon Street near Point Breeze Avenue.

Cops said a 2-year-old boy was shot in the arm. He was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, where he was listed in stable condition.
