I just found out that I'm pregnant with my first child. I work out regularly and want to do so throughout my pregnancy.

Q: I just found out that I'm pregnant with my first child. I work out regularly and want to do so throughout my pregnancy. What do you advise?

A: Congratulations! Pregnancy is a wonderful time in a woman's life. First, I recommend that you discuss with your doctor your plans to continue working out. As long as you don't have any contraindications, get your doctor's blessing, then go for it. Most women are able to pretty much maintain their pre-pregnancy workout until the final months of pregnancy. However, there are exercise exceptions that are probably best avoided during pregnancy, like high impact or contact sports such as basketball, rollerblading and lacrosse.
