Five environmental groups, including the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, have appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia to overturn rulings by two federal judges in favor of allowing the 45-foot deepening of the Delaware River navigation channel.

Five environmental groups, including the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, have appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit in Philadelphia to overturn rulings by two federal judges in favor of allowing the 45-foot deepening of the Delaware River navigation channel.

Environmental opponents contend that the project violates "multiple" federal and state laws.

The appeal was filed Tuesday night.

U.S. District Judge Sue L. Robinson in Wilmington and U.S. District Judge Joel A. Pisano ruled separately, on Nov. 17 and on Jan. 13, that the 104.5-mile deepening between Camden and the Atlantic Ocean could proceed.    - Linda Loyd
