Penn endowment beats S&P but trails bigger Ivies amid U.S. credit crisis

The University of Pennyslvania has fewer private-equity investments than Harvard, Yale or Princeton, and says that's why it underperformed the larger Ivy League endowment funds (while still beating the S&P 500) in the year ended June 30. But it's possible Penn's proportionately small focus on private investments may end up helping the school if those markets collapse, as some industry pros expect.
