VP Pence to visit Philadelphia Saturday; detours advised

Vice President Mike Pence to Philadelphia Saturday to talk courts and the battle to confirm Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. President Trump on Tuesday nominated the appeals court jurist to a vacant seat on the high court.

The area around Independence Mall could be even more of a mess than usual Saturday: Vice President Pence is coming to town.

Pence is scheduled to speak at noon at Congress Hall to the Philadelphia chapter of the Federalist Society, a group of conservative lawyers and academics who advocate limited government and strict-constructionist courts that interpret the law rather than expand it.

A spokesman for the society said that Pence would be speaking about the role of the courts and President Trump's nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch for a vacant seat on the Supreme Court.

The event is private and not open to the public.

In light of the security closures around Independence Mall and demonstrations planned in the area, SEPTA advises travelers to use the Market-Frankford and Broad Street Lines to get around.
