Man found dead after West Deptford standoff

Authorities say a man has been found dead inside a West Deptford home where police heard a gunshot while trying to serve a warrant.

Members of a fugitive task force went to the home on the 1100 block of Buckingham Drive to arrest a man described as a "possible suspect" in a burglary at about 1:20 p.m. Monday.

West Deptford police said the officers heard a gunshot from the residence's basement.

A SWAT team was called to the scene and neighbors were evacuated.

Police were engaged in what they believed was a standoff; hours after the shot was heard, authorities said the suspect was thought to be alone but not communicating with them.

The SWAT team later entered the home, police said, and found the 24-year-old man dead inside. Officials said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police didn't identify the man this morning.
