Gunshot, and then a standoff ensues, in West Deptford

A gun went off Monday afternoon inside a West Deptford townhouse where detectives were planning to arrest a man believed to be involved in a recent burglary, authorities said.

A SWAT team responded to the scene in the 1100 block of Buckingham Drive and neighbors were evacuated after the gunshot was heard around 2:30 p.m.

Authorities, still at the scene two hours later, said the suspect was believed to be alone but was not communicating with them.

He is a "possible suspect" in a burglary in which a gun was stolen, Bernie Weisenfeld, spokesman for the prosecutor's office, said. More details on the burglary were not immediately available.

Detectives with the fugitive task force of the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office were outside the house talking to people at the time the gunshot was heard, Weisenfeld said. U.S. Marshals also were present.
