A Camden man shot by police during an alleged domestic violence call died Sunday, four days after the confrontation in East Camden.

Jose A. Fernandez-Ventura, 38, died of his injuries at Cooper University Hospital, the Camden County Prosecutor's Office said Monday.

He was shot by a Camden County police officer responding to a 911 call. The caller said his sister-in-law was in a house on the 2700 block of Federal Street, being hit by Fernandez-Ventura, who threatened to kill her, according to a translator on a recording of the 911 call released by the prosecutor's office.

Officers heading up a stairwell toward the second-floor apartment found a 1½-year-old at the top of the stairs and the woman sitting on a sofa in the apartment, holding an 8-month-old in her lap, the prosecutor's office said. The officers saw Fernandez-Ventura point his gun toward the woman and infant and fire, the prosecutor's office said.

An officer opened fire, and Fernandez-Ventura was hit more than once. The woman, who was dating Fernandez-Ventura, was shot and taken to Cooper. Neither child was injured.

The prosecutor's office did not say whether the woman was struck by Fernandez-Ventura's shots or by the officer's. The office also did not release the woman's condition.

The officer, whose name has not been released, was placed on administrative leave, following standard procedure while the prosecutor's office investigates the use of force.
