Pittsburgh beats Philly in education, income according to new study

They may be known for putting french fries on a sandwich and calling it a whole new sandwich, but Pittsburgh residents are apparently both smarter and wealthier than the folks here in Philadelphia.

They may be known for putting french fries on a sandwich and calling it a whole new sandwich, but Pittsburgh residents are apparently both smarter and wealthier than the folks here in Philadelphia.

This news comes to us from Nerdwallet, a financial advice site, which analyzed data from Philly and Pittsburgh across five categories: Nightlife, sports, education, work, and commute.

The only thing Philly bested our western neighbor at? Sports, which measured attendance rates at professional games.

Pittsburgh, meanwhile, trounced us in commute, education, and work, and tied with us for nightlife.

As far as education, Pittsburgh's high school graduation rate stands at 7 percent higher than ours, which is compounded by their students earning some 250 more points on their SATs on average than the kids here in Philly.

Commuting is a similar loss for Philly, with Pittsburgh boasting about eight times the parking garages per person. And, what's more, Pittsburgh's drivers spend just 39 hours per year in traffic, compared to Philly's 48.

Work is just as bad, with Philly's average household income topping out at $54,615 against Pittsburgh's $63,867. The city's employment rate also stands at 6 percent, compared to Philadelphia's 8 percent. Compounding that is Pittsburgh's cost of living, which is 22 percent lower than Philly's.

Luckily, though, we love our sports teams more than Pittsburgh, with Nerdwallet reporting that the Flyers and Eagles "averaged perfect attendance" for the last five years.

So, really, it looks like we've got our priorities in order here. Check out the infographic below:
