What to see at the Devon Horse Show

Ten days of equestrian delight are set to return to the Devon Horse Show Grounds (23 Dorset Rd., Devon) for the annual Devon Horse Show, running Thursday, May 21 through Sunday, May 31. You've got your racing, jumping, steeplechasing and many other intricate types of horse bound competition encompassing the week-plus event, the oldest of its kind in the country as a matter of fact.

Each day, gates open at 8 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. (except for Sunday, May 24, when gates open at 11 a.m. and Sunday, May 31 when the show will wrap up at 3 p.m.). Take a look at the tentative schedule of events.

Step away from the show's excitement for a shopping retreat at the Country Fair. Opening at 10 a.m. each day, a number of food, clothing and accessories vendors will offer goods. In addition to equestrian apparel and training wear, popular retailers like Anthropologie and Lululemon will also be in attendance. Fair fare, rides at the Midway, art and tea are also on the entertainment plan.

A number of special events are also set to take place throughout the show.

On both Thursday, May 21 and Tuesday, May 26, families will score deals on food, attractions and souvenirs for Family Days. Barn tours will also be offered from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

What would an equestrian event be without a fashionable display of headwear? Thursday, May 27 is dedicated to the ladies. A 10:30 a.m. hat contest featuring categories of Best Hat and Purse Pairing, Most Fascinating, Best Hat to Toe and Best in Show will bring a bit of friendly competition to the day.

It's all about the kids on Sunday, May 31. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., they'll be treated to face painting, hat decorating and parade and caricatures.
