Monday, Oct. 12

The kids are off from school and you're looking for ways to make the day cool. (You are the cool parent/babysitter/aunt/uncle, right?) The Independence Seaport Museum (211 S. Columbus Blvd.) is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and hit the river with paddleboats, ship tours and aquatic activities.

In the weeks leading up to their simultaneous third anniversary and closing, cocktail bar Emmanuelle (1052 N. Hancock St.) hosts a guest bartender on Monday nights through Nov. 30. Tonight brings Adam Bernbach from 2Birds1Stone, Doi Moi, Estadio and Proof in Washington D.C. Emmanuelle opens at 6 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 13

Unwind from a hectic workday with some friendly competition. Johnny Goodtimes hosts BYO Quizzo at the Market and Shops at Comcast Center (1701 JFK Blvd.) starting at 5:30 p.m. For some incentive, winning teams will score $100 gift cards to spend in the shops. 

In an event worthy of the 100-year milestone, Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern Pennsylvania pulls out all the stops for their Big Night Out centennial celebration. The gala takes place at the Kimmel Center (Broad and Spruce Streets) and will feature celeb appearances from Marlon Wayans, Third Eye Blind, Vanessa Williams, Macy Gray, Shontelle and Mo'ne Davis in addition to dinner, auctions and awards. The event opens with a reception at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, Oct. 14

Delve into the archives of American Philosophical Society, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, The Franklin Institute, Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, Scott Memorial Library -Thomas Jefferson University, the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the Wagner Free Institute of Science and see illustrations of Philadelphia's past at the Lantern Slide Salon. Starting at 6 p.m. at the Wagner Free Institute of Science (1700 W. Montgomery Ave.), these 19th and 20th century illustrative artifacts will be presented and discussed.

Pam Grier stars as the smooth and cunning Jackie Brown in the movie of the same name. The Tarantino film screens at 8:30 p.m. at the La Peg beer garden (140 N. Columbus Blvd.) at Fringearts.

Thursday, Oct. 15

British post-punkers The Membranes are on the comeback. Touring for the first time since 1988, they bring their existential concept album Dark Matter/Dark Energy to King Fu Necktie (1248 N. Front St.) for a 7 p.m. show.

A very Philly premiere indeed, Theatre Exile's "Rizzo" is a brand new play based on the former mayor. The production follows the life of Frank Rizzo as he prepares for the 1991 mayoral election. The show begins previews at 7 p.m. Thursday at Christ Church Neighborhood House (20 N. American St.)

Friday, Oct. 16

Just over two weeks out from Halloween, give your costume a sweaty test run at the Cape May Glow Run, a 2-mile fun run through the October dusk. You'll get glow sticks to adorn your appendages with upon registration, which opens at 5 p.m. on Beach Ave. outside of the Cape May Convention Hall.

Shakespeare's famous comedy of man vs. woman, "The Taming of the Shrew" comes to life at the Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre (2111 Sansom St.) for opening night. Curtains are at 7 p.m.

Saturday, Oct. 17

So you want to be an archaeologist? The Penn Museum (3260 South St.) wants to help make that dream come true. All day at the museum, they'll have an interactive dig site for you to get your hands dirty in addition to talks, activities and Q&As with conservators. Pop in between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Happy cider-day. Head down to the Navy Yard (4747 S. Broad St.) for the Pour the Core hard cider festival. Taste samples from Angry Orchard, Woodchuck, Hardball Cider and more, cider-making seminars, live music and food. Doors open at 1 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 18

The region's largest HIV/AIDS awareness and fundraising event, the AIDS Walk Philly returns Sunday, giving fundraisers a chance to either walk or run a 5k, kicking off from the Philadelphia Museum of Art (2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway) at 7:30 a.m. Check-in and registration opens at 6:30 a.m.

Weaving through references of religion, family and the band's hometown of Detroit, Protomartyr take it to the dark side on their third LP The Agent Intellect. They're touring behind the newly released (and largely acclaimed) record by making a stop at Johnny Brenda's (1201 Frankford Ave.) for a 9 p.m. show.
