This week in Philly: June 8-June 14

Things get kicked into high gear this week with excellent late night opportunities and chill afternoon hangouts.

Things get kicked into high gear this week, Monday, June 8 through Sunday, June 14, with excellent late night opportunities and chill afternoon hangouts.

Monday, June 8
A week of Italian culture, food and entertainment continues Monday through Sunday at St. Anthony of Padua (901 N. Dupont St., Wilmington, Del.) for the St. Anthony's Italian Festival. From 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., there will be carnival rides, food, music wine and more.

Timed with the setting of the sun, "Bortle 8" weaves together live theater, sound production and the earth's rotation for a rooftop performance at 8:23 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 8:24 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and 8:25 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The one-man show, being performed on the roof of 1632 S. 4th St., takes audiences on a theatrical trip from the depths of the ocean to the reaches of outer space.

Tuesday, June 9
Das Racist's Heems kicks off his tour in support of his debut solo album Eat Pray Thug at Underground Arts (1200 Callowhill St.) with special guest Philly's own S.T.S. Doors are at 8 p.m.

After their performance at the Tower Theatre, Scottish indie poppers Belle and Sebastian come to the Dolphin Tavern (1539 S. Broad St.) for a 9 p.m. DJ set.

Wednesday, June 10
A collection of local choirs are coming together to raise the roof at the Kimmel Center (Broad and Spruce Streets) for an evening of music by Mendelssohn, Verdi and more, accompanied by the Fred J. Cooper Memorial Organ. The program begins at 8 p.m.

The circle of life is coming … well, full circle. The touring production of Disney's "The Lion King" plays at the Academy of Music (Broad and Locust Streets) until Sunday. Hang with Simba and pals at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Thursday, June 11
During TEDxPhiladelphia, a stacked lineup of speakers — including the Daily News' Ronnie Polaneczky — will lead a program of conversation and discussion centered on justice and equality. Held at the Temple Performing Arts Center (1837 N. Broad St.), the daylong conference runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

If you're, for lack of a better term, jaded by the music festival scene (we don't blame you — the outfits, the selfie sticks, the horror!) Flannelpalooza Chuckoachella should help bring you back down to earth and reinvigorate your music sensibilities. The convergence of comedy, theater and music will see the Figment Theater (1219 Vine St.) re-outfitted as an outdoor festival space with vendors, baked goods and a roster of performers like Johnny Showcase and the Mystic Ticket, Jawbone Junction, Useful Rooster and more.

Friday, June 12
End the workweek on a classy note. The Barnes Foundation (2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway) hosts a Young Professionals Night, celebrating the new exhibit "The Order of Things." The night begins at 7 p.m. and includes cocktails, music and art. You won't want to miss it.

This is a birthday you do not want to miss. To celebrate 15 years of Making Time events, the brooding and powerful Viet Cong and Lower Dens come to Voyeur Nightclub (1221 St. James St.) for the Making Time 15th Anniversary show starting at 9 p.m. (Get there before 11 p.m. for free Tecate, Heineken and Sailor Jerry cocktails.) Dance the rest of the night away with MT residents.

Saturday, June 13
You've seen "Wipeout," the hilariously challenging obstacle course show. Now it's your turn to try out some of the Smash Wall and Big Balls for yourself. The WIPEOUTRun comes to the Daniel S. Frawley Stadium (801 Shipyard Dr., Wilmington, Del.) for an untimed 5k for participants 18 and older. Wave times start between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A new collaboration between High Street on Market (3rd and Market Streets) and Plowshare Farms brings fresh produce to a farmers market outside the restaurant every Saturday starting June 13 from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. This week's lineup includes a curated selection of food artisans and cheesesmakers, ceramics from Felt + Fat and produce from Birchrun Hills Farms.

Sunday, June 14
Chef Josh Lawler from The Farm and the Fisherman (1120 Pine St.) hosts a two-hour class on pig butchering and incorporating spring vegetables into the meal starting at 12:30 p.m. A four-course meal including pork and spring vegetables will be served after.

If you consider yourself one in the "short attention span" category of life, this one's for you. A series of Sundance Film Festival award-winning short films will be shown at PhilaMOCA (531 N. 12th St.) at both 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
