Flavor up your week with these 5 food events: Brews, Oktoberfests, pumpkins

Although Pope Francis is coming this weekend, restaurants in Philly are still holding food events, and even offering specials in his honor.

Although Pope Francis is coming this weekend, restaurants in Philly are still holding food events, and even offering specials in his honor.

Here are five food events to check out.

On Tuesday, Sept. 22, learn a new hobby during Malt House Ltd.'s (7101 Emlen St.) Beginner's Brew Class. Beginning at 7 p.m., this hands-on session will take you step by step on how you can master homebrewing with little supplies. Part two of the class is on Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Although Oktoberfest celebrations happened this past weekend, Iron Hill kicks off #IronHillFest on Thursday, Sept. 24. Running until Sunday, Oct. 11, 11 locations will serve their autumn-themed brew alongside a German-inspired menu. Kitchen options included: Oktoberfest egg rolls, Black Forest meatballs, schnitzel, butternut squash soup, and more.

Devil's Den (1148 S. 11th St.) is getting into pope-themed events by holding a rather boozy one — a Heaven and Hell tap takeover. What does that mean? Expect taps to include high-ABV brews alongside session ales. A few beers offered included: Weyerbacher Heresy, Lucifer Belgian Ale, DuClaw Sweet Baby Jesus!, Hebrew Genesis, and Cape May YOPO (you only pope once). The event starts Friday, Sept. 25, through Sunday, Sept. 27.

For a deal: Offered to anyone with a Philadelphia identification card, all Jose Garces restaurants in the area will offer a 10% resident discount. The price special runs on Friday, Sept. 25, through Monday, Sept. 28.

Escape the pope with a festival of German delicacies during Hop Angel's (7980 Oxford Ave.) Oktoberfest. From Saturday, Sept. 19 through Sunday, Sept. 20 sip on some autumn-themed brews and feast on sausage sandwiches. Both days get started at 3 p.m.
