Playwright Mary Zimmerman adapts Roman poet Ovid's "Metamorphoses." The show centers on retellings of both familiar and new myths, featuring actors undergoing multiple transformations (hence "Metamorphoses"), each of their respective roles melding into one another. Also cool: a real swimming pool in which the actors frequent. "Metamorphoses" plays at the Arden Theatre (40 N. 2nd St.) at 7 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 20 and 27; 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, Saturday, Oct. 24, Sunday, Oct. 25, Wednesday, Oct. 28, Saturday, Oct. 31 and Sunday, Nov. 1; 6:30 p.m. Wednesdays Oct. 21 and 28; 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 and 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, Friday, Oct. 23, Saturday, Oct. 24, Thursday, Oct. 29, Friday, Oct. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 31. After the show on Friday, Oct. 30, enjoy a dessert reception and a panel with the actors, moderated by the Inquirer's David Stearns.

A very Philly world premiere, based on the book "Rizzo: The Last Big Man in Big City America," "Rizzo" follows the life of Frank Rizzo as he heads into the 1991 mayoral election. Set in a South Philly row home, the Theatre Exile production chronicles moments from his time as a cop to police commissioner. "Rizzo" plays at Christ Church Neighborhood House (20 N. American St.) at 7 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 20, 27 and Nov. 3 and Thursdays Oct. 22, 29 and Nov. 5; 8 p.m. Wednesdays Oct. 21, 28 and Nov. 4, Fridays Oct. 23, 30 and Nov. 6 and Saturdays Oct. 24, 31 and Nov. 7 and 3 p.m. Saturdays Oct. 24, 31 and Nov. 7 and Sundays Oct. 25, Nov. 1 and 8.

Greek tragedian Sophocles' "Antigone" is brought to life with 11 actors (some from director Theodoros Terzopoulos' theater in Greece) and modern stage techniques. Loosely inspired by the Boston Marathon bombings, this adaptation centers on a woman's efforts to bury her shamed brother. "Antigone" plays at the Wilma Theater (265 S. Broad St.) at 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays Oct. 20, 27 and Nov. 3; 7:30 p.m. Wednesdays Oct. 21, 28, Thursdays, Oct. 22 and 29 and Sunday, Oct. 25; 8 p.m. Fridays Oct. 23, 30 and Nov. 6 and Saturdays Oct. 24, 31 and Nov. 7 and 2 p.m. Saturdays Oct. 24 and 31, Sundays Oct. 25 and Nov. 1 and Wednesday, Oct. 28.
