What's Happening: The Philly 10K

The Kelly Drive Loop has certainly earned its reputation as the premier running spot in Philadelphia. But in a city this size with so many iconic sights and neighborhoods, why limit yourself?

That's the idea behind the brand-new Philly 10K, an event created by Philadelphia Runner that debuts on September 6. Bypassing the traditional Fairmount Park course utilized by many city events, the Philly 10K takes runners on a journey through a dozen Philadelphia neighborhoods, including Old City, Society Hill, Pennsport and the finish on East Passyunk.

"This is the first race we can think of that is really self-contained in the core of the city," said Bryan Mahon, co-owner of Philadelphia Runner. "Philly has a lot of great races but we wanted to add something that was different than what was already out there."

"Over the last few years, running has become more and more about the experience. People care more and more about the feeling they have walking away from the race," adds Ryan Callahan, outreach director for Philadelphia Runner. "So we went about creating a run that was not only an experience—but an experience unique to Philadelphia."

The race begins at East Passyunk and Reed and will take runners through the Italian Market before entering Midtown on the way through Center City on streets never raced before. The course winds through Old City and Society Hill before moving onto South Street and passing through Pennsport on the way to the finish at East Passyunk and Tasker. With a 7:30 a.m. start time, the post-race festival gets an early start at 9 a.m.

All race finishers age 21 and over receive a complimentary post-race beer specially brewed for this event by Philadelphia Brewing Company. Each finisher—regardless of age—receives a free Shake Shack custard infused with Termini cannolis. (Additional food and beer will be available for purchase from local East Passyunk vendors.)

Registration opens at 10 a.m. Monday morning and costs $55 up until May 31. The race is capped at 3,000 entrants, so sign up early!
