University of Pennsylvania grad John Legend - who put himself through school working as a choir director - was back in town this past weekend to open for Sade at the Wells Fargo Center. And he was feeling churchy on Sunday morning, so he dropped in on Calvary Baptist Church on Haverford Avenue in West Philadelphia. With a camera crew in tow, Legend led the congregation through "How I Got Over," the Clara Ward song that gave a title to the latest album by The Roots, who collaborated with the Ohio-born soul singer on last year's Wake Up!

"A lot of the greatest soul singers in American history started in the black church. It's very obvious when you listen to gospel and soul music, you can see and hear and feel the connection," Legend says in the video posted on his Facebook page. "I thought it'd be cool to go back in, do something that explored my roots a little bit, surprise the choir, surprise the church. It was cool, like the church calling out for me."
