Report: Whale apparently killed by ship strike

A dead whale that washed up on Monmouth Beach on the North Jersey Shore on Monday apparently was killed by a collision with a ship, the Asbury Park Press reports.

Inquirer staff report:

A dead whale that washed up on Monmouth Beach on the North Jersey Shore on Monday apparently was killed by a collision with a ship, the Asbury Park Press reports.

The newspaper quoted Jay Pagel, senior field technician for the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine, as saying a necropsy conducted yesterday revealed the 27-foot female humpback had injuries consistent with a ship strike.

The whale was cut into pieces and buried on the beach because Monmouth Beach's sea wall made removal difficult, the Press reported.
