Eagles set meeting with animal welfare groups
Inquirer staff writer Amy Worden reports:
The Philadelphia Eagles have called for a meeting with area animal welfare groups Monday to discuss dogfighting in the wake of their signing Michael Vick.
When asked the format, the Eagles said they would “just listen,” said Gail Luciani, spokeswoman of the Pennsylvania SPCA.
She said the Eagles were going to invite a lot of animal welfare groups, seeking to be inclusive, including the Chester County SPCA and the Delaware County SPCA.
Michael Vick will not attend the meeting, she said.
The meeting is set for 5 pm at the NovaCare complex.

What do they need to "listen to" that most people with any ounce of common sense and humanity already know: torturing, drowning, electrocuting, hanging, beating, shooting, and killing another living creature for pleasure and amusement is wrong? That it is wrong to allow dogs to rip each other and other animals apart and call it an entertaining "sport?" Maybe I am missing something, but there is nothing to discuss. Dogfighting is deplorable and unconscionable and has no place in a civilized society. Those that engage in such an activity have no moral scruples. End of discussion. Jame Gumb- Swash1, I think you are absolutely right. And if Vick wants to redeem himself in the eyes of fans, he should open up his multi-million dollar checkbook, think of a nice amount to donate to the Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society, then add three zeros to it (not including the ones after the decimal point). THAT will be a true redeeming factor.
What M. Vick did was wrong, and yes, he should have been punished by the law, and he was, and served his time. However, people in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones. To all the irrate eagle fans that are complaining they will no longer support. Whatever! If Vick is responsible for taking the Eagles to the superbowl, you'll be on his jersey tail just like you do all the other players. Also, for "everyone" that's complaining. Who are you to judge? Seriously, who are you? Have you looked into your own life or past, what will be found? There's not a perfect person that walks the face of this earth. But it so easy to judge someone else's wrong doing when the finger isn't being pointed at you. Another thing, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't Michael Phelps caught on tape smoking a marijuana bomb pipe. Hey, he's still swimming, still getting endorsments. So are so many other athletes, politicians, you name it. Another thing, when M. Vick was first released from prison and working with the construction company, where were the protestors then? If it were one of your children/family members it would be a entirely different story. The excuse would be, "he had a troubled child hood". So people stop judging, get your own life right and stop trying to be the ruler in somone elses. green365

Considering this is all because of Vick, why not have him at the meeting? Shouldn't he be an active participant? Why hide him from these groups? I thought he was supposed to start working with them? I can't help but feel the Eagles and Vick are trying to best stage an event and that the Eagles want to set everything up before Vick enters the room. What Vick did was beyond a "mistake". A mistake is something one does once, not over and over and certainly not as a business. I'm tired of being made to feel guilty over not feeling sorry for him. Michael Vick brought this on himself. Prison was his punishment. Did he learn anything? We won't know until he starts reaching out in the communities and if he does it beyond the contract time. I wish Vick well, but please don't expect me to fawn over his remorse. I want him to prove that he now knows and believes what he was doing was wrong and not just because wrong because he got caught. kmon
And did the Phillies meet with domestic violence groups after Brett Myers stomped his wife and did anyone care if they did or didn't? mlr710
All this talk about Stallworth, Meyers, etc. has convinced me ... that stricter rules need to be put in place to get all these people out of pro sports because they are doing more damage than good. RussOCNJ

Amanda718 if your kids look to Athletes who they have never met as role models then you need to take a step back and look at what you are doing wrong as a parent. cusoraider

Holding a meeting is not be pro active, it's just a meeting. Believe me the eagles will stall and bs their way thru this whole thing until the people forget (they always do) and in the end the eagles and vick will have done nothing in the way of animal rights. This whole thing has nothing to do with second chances it's a desperate team looking for any angle to win a super bowl. I will be shocked if they make the playoffs !!!!!! lalleva
RationAl-kudos to you sir. The Eagles are feeling the heat. Father of the year Andy Reid is headed for collapse with arrogant Jeff Lurie. Dr. Michael
Dr.Michael, what color is the sky in your world? LOL! The Eagles aren't feeling any heat...oh, did you buy your jersey yet? We know you're the biggest Vick fan there ever was! Hurry, not many left! mlr710
