At least 9 died on Pa. highways over holiday weekend

Inquirer staff report:

Nine people were killed and 309 others were injured in Pennsylvania in the more than 700 crashes investigated by the State Police during the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend, the agency said today.

State Police Commissioner Frank E. Pawlowski said seven of the dead were not wearing seat belts and alcohol was a factor in accidents that resulted in four fatalities.

During the four-day period, state police arrested 341 people for driving under the influence, cited 810 individuals for not wearing seatbelts and issued citations to 76 for not securing children in safety seats.

Last year, seven people died and 314 others were injured in crashes investigated by the state police.

The figures do not include accidents investigated by other law enforcement agencies.
