'Jersey Shore': A riot breaks out

The natives are very restless on last night’s 'Jersey Shore'

When do you know it's time to leave Florence? When the whole city turns on you. And that's pretty much what happened on last night's Jersey Shore.

The natives were more than restless. They were all but waving pitchforks.

Give you one guess who it was whipping the Italian crowd into a frenzy. Just look at the video.

Right, it was the Situation. When the clubgoers began making a gesture that looked like a Mussolini salute to me but apparently translates as "shame" and began chanting an obscenity at our Garden Staters, the Sitch got mighty angry and began taunting, challenging and cursing them Not the smartest idea when you're surrounded by an angry mob.

Of course, as Vinnie pointed out, "Mike only acts llke a tough guy when there are people around to hold back the fight." In this case he had a phalanx made up of not only the club's bouncers but also MTV bodyguards, so he could afford to act very, very tough.

I loved Ronnie saying, "I was hoping somebody would start something." Um, Lion of Seaside, if you had stepped down onto the floor past your cordon of protection, I imagine you would have gotten your wish.

The boys weren't the only ones taking abuse. Deena and Snooki didn't want the night to end so they went on to another club where they were surrounded by rings of jeering, jostling men. You get the sense the kids might have worn out their welcome?

The ladies go to the bar where in addition to being insulted, they have ice cubes thrown at them. By the bartender! Yo, Snooks, take a freakin' hint!

"They were making fun of us," said Deena. "Maybe it was the boots." Yeah, it was probably the boots.

You can understand the Situation being a little wound up. At the final Sunday meal, there was a big argument because no one wanted to room with him when the show moved back to Jersey for Season 5. When he threatened to quit, there was practically a stampede to open the door for him.

Where oh where is a tough guy to go when he he is unwanted by friend and foe?
