Ratings news: Grammy audience shrinks

Not since 2009 has the music awards show had viewer viewers

Great music, big drama (thank you, Kanye) and all the Sam Smith you could handle. What's not to like about Sunday night's Grammy Awards?

Well, apparently it didn't make us that enthusiastic because 25.3 million people watched the broadcast on CBS. That's down 11 per cent from last year and is in fact the smallest audience for a Grammy telecast since 2009.

(It's way below the 39.9 million who tuned in in 2012. But that carries an asterisk because of Whitney Houston's death shortly before the event.)

Why the dropoff? Well, it might have been competition from AMC's one-two punch of The Walking Dead and Better Call Saul. And CBS isn't really hurting over those numbers anyway. The Grammy audience was nearly three times larger than for the shows on the other three networks combined.
