Uruguay reaches quarterfinals

PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa - The game on the line, Luis Suarez sidestepped two defenders in the driving rain and struck a right-footed shot from the edge of the penalty area.

"The truth is, I didn't realize the ball was going to go in," he said.

It did. And now Uruguay is headed to the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 40 years after beating South Korea, 2-1, on Saturday.

Suarez, who had Uruguay's only goal in its 1-0 group stage win over Mexico, scored twice against the Koreans - early in the first half and again in the 80th with the score tied at 1.

"In these moments, the only thing I want to do is enjoy," said Suarez, who jumped over a row of photographers to celebrate his second goal with his teammates.

"The key to Uruguay's improvement [at the end of the game] was South Korea's goal. We stopped thinking about not conceding a goal," Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez said. "Luckily, Suarez scored a spectacular goal that gave us victory."

"I'm really happy because, being young, I always dream of these types of moments," the 23-year-old forward said. "These moments we're experiencing are once in a lifetime."

Picking favorites. Nobody gives Mexico much of a chance against Diego Maradona's Argentina team in the round of 16 on Sunday in Johannesburg. Coach Javier Aguirre isn't ready to pack his bags yet.

Aguirre, looking irritated and answering questions before they had been completed at Saturday's news conference, said his team had been given up for "dead and buried."

Aguirre acknowledged Argentina was "the favorite by far," but said "we will see what happens."

Banking on Rooney. England coach Fabio Capello and captain Steven Gerrard expect to see Wayne Rooney to come through against Germany when the two teams renew their World Cup rivalry Sunday in the second round in Bloemfontein.

The striker failed to score in the three group games and has not hit the target for Manchester United or his country since April, despite having a great season before that.

"Rooney has trained very well, shot very well at goal and scored a lot of goals" in practice, Capello told reporters Saturday. "We hope tomorrow he will be the same."
