Union to open U.S. Open Cup play against the Harrisburg Islanders

The game is set for 7:30 p.m. June 14 at Talen Energy Stadium.

The Union will open play in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a home game against the Harrisburg Islanders, their former affiliate of the United Soccer League. The game is to start at 7:30 p.m. on June 14 at Talen Energy Stadium.

Major League Soccer teams earn a bye into the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup, the oldest cup competition for soccer in the United States and one that consist of teams of all levels.

Last season, the Union advanced to the quarterfinals before losing at the New England Revolution in penalty kicks. In 2015 and 2016, the Union lost in the Open Cup championship to Seattle and Sporting Kansas City, respectively.

Harrisburg advanced to the fourth round with Wednesday's 3-0 victory over Reading United AC, which is the Union's Premier Development League affiliate.

The Union (4-5-4) will visit New York City FC (6-5-3) in Saturday's 1 p.m. MLS game at Yankee Stadium. After Saturday, the Union won't resume MLS action until hosting the New York Red Bulls on June 18. Harrisburg is 2-4-4 in USL play.
