Nigerian soccer players to get $90,000 bonus each if they win African Cup of Nations

The Nigerian soccer federation says each national team player will receive a $90,000 bonus if they win next year's African Cup of Nations.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — The Nigerian soccer federation says each national team player will receive a $90,000 bonus if they win next year's African Cup of Nations.

Spokesman Ademola Olajire says the players will get $10,000 for each win in the group stage, plus another $15,000 for winning in the quarterfinals, $20,000 for the semifinals and $25,000 for the final.

Federation secretary general Musa Adamu says the reward is meant "to motivate the players to make Nigeria proud." He declined to say how the body would source the funds.

Nigeria, a two-time African Cup champion, failed to qualify for the 2012 tournament despite a star-studded team that included European-based players Ikechukwu Uche, Joel Obi, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, Emmanuel Emenike, Taye Taiwo and Chinedu Obasi.
