Union second-year defender Josh Yaro underwent shoulder surgery earlier this week, and his recovery time is expected to be between three and four months, the team said.

The surgery was to repair a cartilage tear. He suffered the injury during the team's preseason in Clearwater.

"Josh came into preseason very fit and sharp. This setback is tough, but the right thing to do was to be proactive and surgery to repair the shoulder is what's best for Josh long-term," Union coach Jim Curtin said in a statement. "We know he will come back stronger than ever. We have a very deep roster that we believe in, and we know the next man will step up in Josh's absence."

Yaro, 22, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 MLS draft out of Georgetown, missed time last year with a shoulder injury and also with a concussion. He appeared in 17 games, making 15 starts.

Yaro was slated to contend for a center back starting spot. The Union recently signed Oguchi Onyewu, the 34-year-old veteran with 69 caps for the U.S. national team as a center back. Oguchi, who hasn't played in an organized game in nearly two years, said he came with the mindset of being a starter.

The Union also have 24-year-old Richie Marquez, who returns after starting 33 of the 34 games at center back, and Ken Tribbett who started 19 games.

Roster named

Tab Ramos, the U.S. under-20 men's national team head coach, named the 20-player roster for the 2017 CONCACAF under-20 championship that doubles as the team's 2017 World Cup qualifying tournament, running Feb. 17 to March 5 in Costa Rica.

Named from the Union is defender Auston Trusty.
