U.S. Copa America Centenario roster: Player-by-player analysis

Here is a player-by-player look at the roster for the United States team in the Copa América Centenario tournament.

Here is a look at the 23 players on the roster for the United States team in the Copa América Centenario tournament.

Brad Guzan (Aston Villa, England): Guzan has earned the starting spot for Copa América, and he has a 10-4-4 record in tournaments that include World Cup qualifying, the FIFA Confederations Cup, the Gold Cup, and Copa América.

Tim Howard (Colorado Rapids, MLS): The 37-year-old Howard will join the Rapids after completing a 10-year run with Everton of the English Premier League. He was a starter for all four World Cup games in 2014.

Ethan Horvath (Molde, Norway): Horvath, who will turn 21 Thursday, put in some strong performances in the Europa League and has set himself up as the potential U.S. keeper of the future.

Michael Orozco (Club Tijuana, Mexico): Local fans may remember Orozco as a defender for the Union during their inaugural MLS season in 2010, when he started 29 games.

Matt Besler (Sporting Kansas City, MLS): A center back, Besler started all four World Cup games for the U.S. in 2014, and in 2012 he was MLS defender of the year.

Steve Birnbaum (D.C. United, MLS): A third-year starter for D.C. United, Birnbaum is competing for time at center back and earned a start in the USA's 4-0 World Cup qualifier win against Guatemala in March.

Edgar Castillo (Monterrey, Mexico): Originally not on the roster, Castillo replaced Timmy Chandler, who suffered a right quadriceps strain.

John Brooks (Hertha Berlin, Germany): Owning both American and German citizenship, he scored the game-winner in the USA's 2-1 win over Ghana in the opening game of the 2014 World Cup.

Geoff Cameron (Stoke City, England): A versatile player who performed at both center back and in the midfield during the 2014 World Cup, Cameron is a strong attacker when playing in the back.

Fabian Johnson (Borussia Mönchengladbach, Germany): He started all four games at right back in the 2014 World Cup and will be a starter at left back in Copa América.

DeAndre Yedlin (Sunderland, England): Among the fastest players on the team, Yedlin, 22, appeared in three World Cup games in 2014 and will be a starting right back in Copa América.

Kyle Beckerman (Real Salt Lake, MLS): At 34, he still provides boundless energy. Beckerman has appeared in 389 MLS games and started three of the four games for the Americans in the 2014 World Cup.

Alejandro Bedoya (Nantes, France): The 29-year-old appeared in all four matches in the 2014 World Cup, making three starts, and had two assists in the final Copa América warm-up match Saturday against Bolivia.

Michael Bradley (Toronto FC, MLS): He is not a flashy player, but is arguably the team's most technically sound, and he has an off-the-charts soccer IQ. He is one of two players to play every minute in the last two World Cups.

Jermaine Jones (Colorado Rapids, MLS): At 34, he remains a strong two-way performer with great closing speed, and is an adept tackler. He started four World Cup games in 2014.

Perry Kitchen (Hearts, Scotland): A former player for D.C. United, the 24-year-old Kitchen is just beginning to make his mark on the national team.

Darlington Nagbe (Portland Timbers, MLS): A potential spark plug off the bench, Nagbe scored his first international goal during a 1-0 win over Ecuador in a Copa América warm-up last month and was a key members of Portland's MLS championship team last year.

Christian Pulisic (Borussia Dortmund, Germany): The 17-year-old Hershey, Pa., native has great composure with the ball and is considered one of the up-and-coming stars on the team. He scored his first international goal Saturday in a 4-0 win over Bolivia.

Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City, MLS): A very accurate passer, he had two assists in the 2014 World Cup, playing in all four games and making three starts.

Clint Dempsey (Seattle Sounders, MLS): Union fans remember Dempsey's scoring the game-winning goal over their team in the 2014 U.S Open Cup final, but he is more known for being the only U.S. player to score in three World Cups. He has 124 caps and 49 goals.

Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes, MLS): A late bloomer who has scored 116 career MLS goals, he appeared twice as a reserve for the U.S. in the 2014 World Cup.

Bobby Wood (Hamburg, Germany): After scoring 17 goals for Germany's 2 Bundesliga side Union Berlin, Wood doesn't need much space to get his shot off, and he should make an impact as a starter or a reserve. He had the assist against Ecuador in a 1-0 Copa América warm-up win and another in the rout of Bolivia pm Saturday.

Gyasi Zardes (Los Angeles Galaxy, MLS): The 24-year-old Zardes is creative with the ball. He is not afraid to take defenders one-on-one and scored his fourth and fifth international goals in the final tuneup win over Bolivia.EndText
