Union still feeling sting of 1-1 draw

After a 1-1 draw with the visiting San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday that felt more like a loss, the Union returned to practice Tuesday, more than a week before their next Major League Soccer game.

Next up is the Los Angeles Galaxy (4-1-3), who will visit the Union on May 11.

The Union were up a man and a goal against the Earthquakes before surrendering the equalizer in the 83rd minute.

"We are disappointed, everybody in the whole club is upset we dropped two points, but we do see a lot of positives," coach Jim Curtin said after practice.

The biggest positive is the standings. The Union are 4-3-1 for 13 points, good for second place in the Eastern Conference. First-place Montreal has 14 points, but the Union own a game in hand on the Impact. The conference's top six teams will make the playoffs.

On the injury front, the Union are hoping center back Ken Tribbett will be available to face the Galaxy.

Tribbett missed the last three games with a sprained right ankle. There had been hope that he would be available against San Jose.

"He said cutting and jumping are fine," Curtin said. "It's strange, but when he has to lock his ankle and strike a long pass, is when he feels it a bit."

Curtin said that Tribbett was honest with the coaches in telling them that he wasn't 100 percent Saturday.

In the last three games, Tribbett was replaced by rookie Joshua Yaro, the second overall draft selection out of Georgetown.

Yaro has played well, but he failed to clear a ball that was intercepted by San Jose and led to the tying goal.

"I think in three games, Josh has come in and done really well," Curtin said. ". . .You could have a strong 89 minutes, and if you miss-clear one or lose your man on a free kick, then that is what everybody remembers."

If both Tribbett and Yaro are healthy, Curtin wasn't willing to say whom he would start against L.A.

"Right now, it is still to be determined."
