Tim McDermott leaves 76ers for Union

The Union made a major executive hire when they named Tim McDermott the club's new chief business officer on Wednesday. McDermott will have responsibility for overseeing the team's business operation, including working closely with the new USL team, Bethlehem Steel FC, along with the Philadelphia Union Academy.

He is a former Eagles employee and the brother of Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.

So where does that leave Dave Rowan, who assumed day-to-day business operations in the interim as chief revenue officer after former chief executive officer and operating partner Nick Sakiewicz was fired in early October?

Rowan, at this point, is still with the organization, according to team officials, but McDermott will assume some of his responsibilities.

This will be the third Philadelphia professional team with which McDermott has worked.

Since December 2013, McDermott served as chief marketing and innovation officer for the 76ers.

Previously, McDermott was the chief marketing officer for the Eagles and the Washington Capitals.

McDermott also spent several years with Comcast in new media development. Earlier in his career, he served as assistant director of sales and marketing for the San Diego Chargers and began his career in corporate sponsorships with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

A three-year letter winner in football at Cornell, McDermott then earned his MBA from Harvard.

"I am truly looking forward to joining the Union and working towards this vision".
