Chilean midfielder Santiago Dittborn making impression on Union

The Union seem impressed with their latest trialist, but whether they sign the 22-year-old Chilean free agent, Santiago Dittborn, remains to be seen.

The Union seem impressed with their latest trialist, but whether they sign the 22-year-old Chilean free agent, Santiago Dittborn, remains to be seen.

Dittborn, an attacking midfielder with a strong left foot - something the Union, or any team, could surely use - has earned six caps with the Chilean senior national team and is with the Union all week.

"It is only three days he has been with us and it is still early but he has been impressive," Union coach Jim Curtin said of Dittborn.

"He's a good young player and we have a decision to make," Curtin said. "The first few days have been good and we have to get a couple of more looks at him and then we will put our heads together and make a decision."

A decision that needs to be made by Aug. 6, when Major League Soccer's secondary transfer window closes after opening Wednesday.

When asked about the Union's intentions during this transfer window, technical director Chris Albright said, "I would say we are looking to be active but there is nothing imminent."

Curtain said many factors go into signing a player, including the money involved and offers from other teams.

"There is also, how does he fit into our team, does he displace somebody?"

Curtin continued, saying that there are extra decisions when bringing in a foreign player because Major League Soccer allots teams eight international roster slots, although teams can acquire more in trades.

"You would like to see foreign players pushing to be a starter," Curtin said.

Curtin won't tip his hand, but it's safe to say he and the staff are intrigued by Dittborn.
