Union held on despite playing two men down

The Union held on for its second consecutive victory Saturday despite two red cards in the second half, edging Chivas USA, 1-0, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.

Freddy Adu's goal in the 40th minute proved to be the difference as goalkeeper Zac MacMath and the Union defense extended their shutout streak to 332 minutes.

Following an opening 40 minutes that featured few scoring opportunities, the Union (2-3-1) got things started with a series of dribbling moves by midfielder Michael Farfan that led to a cross into the middle.

After the ball deflected off Chivas defender James Riley, Adu heeled the ball into the goal.

Chivas (3-4-1) had a chance to tie the score two minutes later when midfielder Nick LaBrocca launched a shot from nearly 20 yards out. But MacMath made the clutch save.

The second half got physical, and Union players Keon Daniel and Gabriel Farfan received red cards in the 75th and 85th minutes, respectively. Daniel received a straight red for challenging the Goats' Ryan Smith, and Farfan was red-carded after a hard tackle on Riley.

Farfan's challenge led to a scuffle between the teams, and Union manager Peter Nowak was ejected after entering the field of play.

Despite having just nine players to finish the game, the Union won stayed unbeaten in their last three games.
