Farfan making most of opportunity to start

Jordan Harvey had started 45 of the Union's first 47 games over the first year and a half of the team's existence, so it caught many by surprise when he was traded last week to the Vancouver Whitecaps for allocation money.

Jordan Harvey had started 45 of the Union's first 47 games over the first year and a half of the team's existence, so it caught many by surprise when he was traded last week to the Vancouver Whitecaps for allocation money.

A main beneficiary was Gabe Farfan, who took over for Harvey in Saturday's scoreless draw at San Jose. It was Farfan's eighth appearance this season and fourth start.

"Like everybody I was surprised [about the trade], but these things happen in soccer," Farfan said. "I got the opportunity to play left back and have to take advantage of it."

Farfan was encouraged by his performance Saturday.

"It will help me a lot with my confidence," he said. "I went the full 90 [minutes] and did a decent job and only can move forward from here, and hopefully we can get three points in New England."

The Union (7-4-7) visit the New England Revolution (3-8-7) on Sunday.
