With the NBA draft just nine days away, here's a roundup of mock drafts, along with projections for the Sixers at No. 15.
ESPN.com's Chad Ford has the Sixers taking Kentucky power forward Terrence Jones:
The Sixers might have a tough choice here between Jones, Sullinger and Arnett Moultrie. They need size, but also shooting. Jones may be the compromise. He measured out very well for a power forward at the combine, has an NBA body and proved to be a solid rebounder and shot-blocker in college. He has tremendous upside if he puts his heart into it.
SI.com's Sam Amick has the Sixers selecting Duke shooting guard Austin Rivers:
The Sixers are well-equipped in their backcourt with young Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner, but Rivers could fit in nicely with his ability to create his own shot and play both positions. The bigger [Terrence] Ross is the better shooter and athlete of the two, but he doesn't have Rivers' versatility.
Jeff Goodman of CBSSports.com also has them taking Rivers:
Doug Collins and the Sixers need scoring desperately. Doc's kid does just that.
Sean Deveney of The Sporting News thinks the Sixers will end up with UConn guard Jeremy Lamb:
The Sixers could look to move up, they could deal Andre Iguodala, they could deal out of the draft altogether. But they need shooters, and Lamb can shoot.
Draft Express has the Sixers going with Baylor power forward Perry Jones.
Hoops Hype projects Mississippi State power forward Arnett Moultrie to the Sixers:
One of the most athletic bigs in the country, Moultrie is a force on the glass and scores in a variety of ways. He can even step out and bury college three pointers. With great length and agility, Moultrie is an intriguing option for teams looking for size and athleticism. The two big complaints about him are his attitude and lack of strength. His intensity level is not always great, particularly on the defensive end. He also seems to be under 230 pounds, but appears to have the frame to add weight once he gets with NBA trainers. Moultrie is getting looks in the late lottery to mid first round.
Steve Alexander of Rotoworld.com has the Sixers taking North Carolina power forward John Henson:
Elton Brand is getting older and the Sixers could use a defensive banger to replace him. Henson should be just that. If they don’t go with Henson here, Terrence Jones would be another solid option.
Matt Moore of CBSSports.com projects Henson's teammate, Tyler Zeller, to the Sixers:
Doug Collins will love this guy, and he's a significant upgrade over Spencer Hawes, saving them the money on re-signing him.
Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com has them going with Ohio State power forward Jared Sullinger:
Sullinger drops, but maybe to an ideal place. The 76ers can use a power player, and the experienced Sullinger will be an interior presence.
Potential stars only. You're going to need three freaks to get past Miami or OKC. "Solid" picks won't get it done. person
If perry jones drops to #10 turner goes to new Orleans. Re structure brand Sign Lou with brands difference. From 18 mil to 10.5 mil. And still have the 17 mil that was available before the brand deal. Except now Lou has been re signed with 17 mil to spend as opposed to signing Lou and only having 10. Leaving the #10 to sign (4 mil) and a free agent floor spacer to sign (jr) with 13 mil remaining. I would offer jr 8.5-9 mil. Jrue, jr, iguodala, brand, hawes (1 yr mle) Lou, ariza, Thad, perry, lavoy, Nik, battie (1 year) Invite Hollis Thompson and don't kill me Rodney carney to camp. combocancer1975
Are we ever going to bring in players we might draft for a workout ? It's been a bunch of guys who won't get drafted 7mel11
Rivers is a scorer but not a shooter; this team needs shooters at guard.
Sullinger will be a marginal NBA player.
The pick is Zeller JBinPA
first things first..sixers need to resign Lavoy Allen..then when that happens, worry about draft. teenwolf
7mel11:I've been on that bandwagon for a few weeks now...I do now John Henson will be in later this week (hoopshype, and it'll be his 11th stop), and I'm sure a few more, but they certainly have been late in the process...Noted earlier, just 3 of the 26 guys they've met with here are projected first rounders...Secretive as well, texting the reporters just one day in advance of future workouts...Not endearing,IMO. bearsfriend
Makes you wonder if something is up - like trading the pick 7mel11
What we need is a GM with a plan? Lets hire whoever is the assistant GM for the thunder and let him work. I have seen nothing to make me believe that this team is getting better or will be better bgwille
I still get the sense that some posters think this is the Mississippi with riverboat gamblers in every front office, including the Sixers who will wheel and deal, adding virtually an entire new team. This is the NBA, the generally conservative NBA where teams look to add a top draft pick and/or a top free agent to turn their teams around. Collins and ownership might surprise everyone by trying to re-sign Hawes and LouWill, signing Lavoy Allen, keeping Meeks, trading Iguodala or Turner and the first round draft pick, and adding two second round draft picks, one of whom makes the team, perhaps ending with a roster of three or four new faces, one of whom will be a consistent shooting guard and perhaps another who will be a veteran, hard-nosed big and a third who will be a veteran point guard off the bench. chuckw
Terrance Jones may be too similar to a player we already have in T. Young. Royce White needs the ball in his hands to be effective and is a below average shooter, so he's not a good fit at this point. Every big man in this draft will be torn to shreds by Phily fans because each has issues and will take a while to develop IF they ever do.
That narrows my wish list to Jeremy Lamb, Terrance Ross, Austin Rivers. Henson (shot blocking) and Sullinger (bulk, scoring) would be good pieces for the 2nd unit and safe picks compared to the Jones boys-- if the Sixers decide to go big. DeanoP44
I still believe Iggy (and another player for cap purposes) gets traded to LA for Gasol. As long as Brand's contract is wiped off the books. In terms of the draft, they can't target anyone at pick 15. But they need a shooting guard, now that Lou is gone. beegal99
Agree, the lack of bigs working out for the Sixers is curious. I wouldn't be suprised if a deal is already in the works for a proven NBA big. I'd do Gasol for Iggy & Vuc. I'd also do ET & 15 for 10 & Okefor (or Ariza). Even though the draft comes first I believe the trades will dictate who we draft and who we go after in FA. They're already working on something and are keeping it close to the vest. mtairy1
If the Sixers can trade Iggy and get a scorer (who preferably is also a good shooter) and a shot blocker, I would be very happy. Something like a Ross, Henson combo. blah
mtairy:I believe the first scenerio you laid out is the ticket, and also why long, athletic wings (Ross,Harkless) has been their appetite to date....I do believe Memphis is also in the market for Pau. bearsfriend
mtairy1: I don't see them trading BOTH Iguodala and Turner. I do think they will move one or the other with a pick or picks for a veteran big and will try to get Ross in the draft. The key for me is whether they will amnesty Brand or keep him as a expiring contract. If they do not amnesty him (which I think more likely) then not much change other than a shooting guard and a big and possibly a veteran point guard off the bench, as I noted before. chuckw
