76ers set to compete in the NBA's summer league

Markelle Fultz is looking to gain chemistry with his summer league teammates. Sixers assistant coach Billy Lange will be watching to see how hard the players compete.

Forward Isaiah Miles recently signed a contract to play for Usak in the Turkish Basketball Super League, but said he has an out in his deal should the Sixers invite him to training camp in September.

The 76ers completed a three-day mini-camp Saturday, and 14 players will open play on Monday in the Utah Jazz Summer League with a 7 p.m. game against the Boston Celtics.

The Sixers will also play Wednesday against the Jazz at 9 p.m. and Thursday against San Antonio at 7.

After that, the Sixers will depart for the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, beginning play Saturday with a 10:30 p.m. game against Golden State.

With the NBA's No. 1 overall pick, Markelle Fultz, the Sixers will likely be must-see TV not only in the Philadelphia area but nationally.

Fultz said Saturday that he has simple goals entering Monday's opener.

"Just having fun, really," Fultz said. "Having the chance to play the game of basketball, getting chemistry with the team, learning the plays and learning what I am capable of. Just giving it my all and seeing what I need to work out before the season starts."

Looking for a competitive group

Sixers assistant coach Billy Lange, who will guide the team in Utah, has similarly simple goals for the young players.

"For the team, it's just compete," Lange said. "Let's just go out and represent the Sixers brand and the Sixers logo. Represent the city of Philadelphia."

Lange went on to say that he wants the players to get accustomed to the culture of 76ers basketball.

"We want them to understand what Philly basketball is, what we're trying to do here, which is build a brand of exciting basketball where guys pass and compete," Lange said. "If we get that with a bunch of guys that don't know each other, they'll enjoy their two or three-week experience."

Roster Makeup

The Sixers released their summer league roster on Saturday. There were no changes from the 14 names on the mini-camp roster that was released on Thursday. Ten of the 14 players are rookies. There are four players with NBA experience, including swingman Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and forward Alex Poythress, who ended the season with the Sixers.

The other two with NBA experience are Aaron Harrison, who played for the Sixers G League team, the Delaware 87ers, but who has also appeared in for 26 games over two seasons for the Charlotte Hornets, and Larry Drew II,who appeared in 12 games during the 2014-2015 season with the Sixers.

Luwawu-Cabarrot, who was selected 24th overall in the first round of the 2016 draft, appeared in 69 games for the Sixers and came on strong at the end, averaging 18.4 points over his last seven games.

Miles looking to make an impression

Forward Isaiah Miles, a 2016 graduate of St. Joseph's, is on the Sixers rookie roster. He played in France last year, averaging 12.2 points for JDA Dijon Basket and recently signed a contract to play for Usak in Turkey.

He said he has an out in his contract if, for instance, the Sixers want to take him to training camp. As with anybody on summer league rosters, he is hoping to make an impression.

"Hopefully, I am willing to overtake my dream and play in the NBA someday," he said. "These are steps I take. Everybody's growth is different, so [I am] just working hard every day."

Miles shot 38.5 percent from three-point range and 88.7 percent from the foul line as a senior at St. Joseph's. His calling card is his perimeter game.

"I am not the most athletic guy on the court, so I have to figure other ways to score, and I think shooting is definitely one of my best assets to my game," Miles said. "The coaches, they don't hesitate to tell me to shoot the ball when I am open"
