Sixers Notes: Sixers may buy out Granger's expiring contract

Danny Granger's status with the 76ers could be resolved on Tuesday.

That's when the franchise may announce whether or not the 6-foot-9 forward, who was acquired in Thursday's trade with the Indiana Pacers, will remain with the team.

Granger wants to play for an NBA championship contender, according to sources. And there's a belief the Sixers will negotiate a buyout of what's left of his expiring contract (about $4 million) to accommodate the former all-star. He must be on a postseason-bound team's roster by Saturday in order play in the playoffs.

"The discussions, the meetings are continuing" with Sixers general manager Sam Hinkie, coach Brett Brown said before Monday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks at the Wells Fargo Center. "I spoke with [Granger] yesterday."

Brown wouldn't disclose what he and Granger discussed. However, the coach did say the 30-year-old does want to play the remainder of the season.

"I think the obvious stuff is assessing his goals and this stage of his career," Brown responded when asked about the Sixers providing an opportunity to play.

"I mean, he's a player and he wants to play. Just trying to sort out what's going to be best for both parties is yet to be determined."

The Sixers acquired Granger and a 2015 second-round pick in exchange for Evan Turner and Lavoy Allen in Thursday's trade with the Indiana Pacers.

Granger has played in 29 games this season with just two starts. He averaged 8.3 points and 1.1 assists after missing the majority of last season with a knee injury.
