Rhys Hoskins held out of Sunday's game with injury

Rhys Hoskins tested his sore hand in the Marlins Park batting cage on Sunday morning but felt enough discomfort that Phillies manager Pete Mackanin left Hoskins out of the lineup for the first time since he reached the majors.

MIAMI — Rhys Hoskins tested his sore wrist in the Marlins Park batting cage on Sunday morning, but felt enough discomfort that Phillies manager Pete Mackanin left Hoskins out of the lineup for the first time since he reached the majors.

"It's just pretty sore," Hoskins said. "We'll see what they have for me to do today and see how it feels tomorrow."

Hoskins injured his hand on Saturday night when he was hit by a 98-mph fastball from Marlins righthander Brian Ellington. He initially stayed in the game before being removed. He had X-rays after the game, and the results were negative. He had his right wrist wrapped on Sunday morning to reduce swelling. It is bruised. Hoskins told Mackanin that he should be able to play on Monday in New York.

"He took some swings in there and he was swinging OK," Mackanin said. "But I think one more day will be fine."

Hoskins homered in the fourth inning on Saturday night and had doubled in the at-bat before he was hit. It was his 12th homer in the last 20 games, and he has reached base safely in 17 straight games. He has been the saving grace to an otherwise brutal season. It would be tough for the Phillies to lose him to an injury.

Honor for Hoskins

Hoskins was named the National League's Rookie of the Month for August, becoming the first Phillies player to earn the award since Maikel Franco in June 2015. Hoskins batted .304 last month with a 1.149 OPS and 11 homers in 22 games.

Morgan continues to impress

Adam Morgan logged three scoreless innings on Sunday to keep the Phillies alive after being used for a key inning in Thursday night's win. Morgan has emerged in the second half as a steady reliever, and he showed his ability this weekend to find success in different roles.

"Our biggest concern with Morgan out of the bullpen was his resilency, if he could bounce back and pitch out of the bullpen after being a starter his whole career," Mackanin said. "He showed really good resilience. I can't say enough about how well he's doing for us."

Morgan has allowed just one earned run in his last 15 1/3 innings. He did not allow a hit on Sunday, yielding just a walk in three innings. Sunday was his longest outing in almost two months.

"I feel like I'm still trying to find my niche in the game," Morgan said. "I don't feel like I'm entitled to anything. One inning, two inning, anything. I think it's important to show versatility."
