ComsoK, how many players are there in the MLB who are "just fine" that do not participate in spring training games? It's not as if this is a contact sport where you let the player sit out during the week and save him for Sunday. If his knees are so suspect that they can't risk him playing at least some spring training games, it's worrisome.

I'll take the opposite side. We/he knows he has some creaky knees, so why push it for meaningless games? It's not contact, but he has to move laterally which is a strain on the knees. There is still time to get worried later.

Frankly, I'll begin to worry only when he's missing regular or post season games, and then, not much, because worrying doesn't do a d••n bit of good, does it?

Utley, is a smart 'baseball' player. He knows what he has to do. I'll take an injured Utley over 95% of the players in this league. I trust him to make the right decisions. I'm not too worried about Chase. Chase, is the man.

You can't be serious, it's WAAAAYYYY past the time to worry. Game 5 NLDS vs Cards, Utley gets a pitch middle in and drives it in the gap for an out. Two years ago, that pitch would've ended up in the 10th row. His power is gone and is no longer a legitimate 3 hole hitter. But the media was too enthralled with Howard's contract and declining production to notice. His range at 2b went from slightly above average to below average. Yeah, be worried.

What is worrying going to do besides give you an ulcer? Either he produces or he doesn't when the time comes. Getting your panties in a bunch right now isn't going to do anything except put you in a bad mood. Take some deep breaths, relax. Sometimes good surprises happen in life, too.

Its time for the Phillies to seriously start looking for a replacement for Utley at 2B. You can plug someone like Galvis in there in an emergency, but Galvis isn't going to give you the offensive production that they've come to expect from Utley. For this year, we can only hope that Utley is there on opening day and can stay healthy and be a reasonable semblance of his old self throughout the season.

I don't know if worry is the word but his decline is occurring and that knee could give out at any time. All they can do is hope for the best over the next 2 years but they should consider moving on after 2013. Time to start bringing in a new core group starting in a few years.

I think Utley is shot. I never heard of a starting player not taking any fielding practice at all or not playing in any spring training games at all. He's had all off season to rest those knees. They're not going to get any better.

Sad to say, but obviously his best years are behind him. Now we're stuck with his crazy contract (not to mention Howard's) for just a average at best 2nd baseman. Should have traded him when we had the chance. Too late for that. They need to win now, right now.

He'll announce his retirement from baseball on Opening Day.

It is obvious that there's something wrong with Utley, no matter what Phillies brass says. When have you ever heard of a guy whom you've been told - scolded, even - by management, is "fine," but hasn't played in any games, the point of which are to get you ready to play when the season starts? It's staring you right in the face, dudes. The Phillies are trying to sell tickets, yes? OK, so how inclined would you be to buy them had they told you the day spring training started that Utley would be joining Howard on the DL before he's even played a single exhibition game? Wake up!

Ugh! Do any of you actually watch the games when he returned last year? His range was not limited whatsoever, his gait and stride were normal, his defense unaffected, he played with the same reckless abandon he always did. Yes, he has a chronic condition but this saving him this Spring is a reasonable precaution to me. Measure his performance on the field in the 2nd half and all evidence illustrated that he was still able to perform.

HIS RANGE IS,IS,IS LESS. HIS OFFENSIVE PRODUCTION, LIKE HOWARD'S, BEGAN TO DROP OFF 2 YEARS AGO AND , IN NO WAY WILL HE GET BETTER AS HE AGES AND THIS KNEE CONDITION GETS WORSE.

Sandy Koufax was one of the greatest pitchers ever, but once he got arthritis, it was over, at quite a young age. That appears to be the case with Utley, and it seems to be happening to the entire core of the Phillies, bringing their remarkable run to an end. Keep in mind that the Braves won the division 14 years in a row, whereas the Phils won five, but it's still an achievement for those of us who are used to the Phils as doormats. The Phils could well be sellers at the deadline.
