Reading outfielder Tyson Gillies suspended
David Murphy
The hits keep on coming for Tyson Gillies, the centerfield prospect acquired as part of the ill-fated Cliff Lee trade of December, 2009.
Gillies has been suspended from Double-A Reading for what the club says is a violation of team rules. No further information is available at this point in time.
Gillies has struggled to stay on the field since the Phillies acquired him from the Mariners along with righthanders Phillippe Aumont and J.C. Ramirez in exchange for Lee.
He appeared in just 28 games in his first season in the organization, which was marked by hamstring injuries and an arrest for cocaine possession (the charges were later dropped). The hamstring troubles carried over into 2011, when he appeared in just three games. This year, Gillies is hitting .294/.382/.433 in 46 games at Reading, but he missed close to two months with a concussion, only recently returning to the field.
God man, you've been given a talent and so many opportunities from this team. GET. IT. TOGETHER. sobjoe24- In the meantime, the Toronto BlueJays have brought up 21 year old speed merchant, Anthony Gose...he of the Roy Oswalt deal...D'arnaud,Villar,Singleton, and especially Domingo Santana will all be following in the future.
bearsfriend - The scouting report on D'Arnaud says he is fragile and will struggle to stay off of the DL himself. He has quite an injury list for a young player and some are early warning chronic. Not good for a catcher.
UncleStosh - He tore his PCL...it has not dimmed his light as a prospect. He holds serious value, and can play first or DH as well.
bearsfriend - bearsfriend I can truly see the need for a DH or 1B... You should put yourself up for GM when Rube steps down.
- i dont think Singleton had any shot with the Phils. They tried him in LF and he was brutal and 1B is locked up until forever and a day. and D'Arnaud could be one of those 'always is hurt' cats...and if he a place as a DH or 1B, then again he has no place on the Phils.
ESFjellin - Can we please let D'Arnaud have at least ONE MLB at bat before you sing his laurels? Seriously, just ONE at bat against major league pitching? He got you Halladay and I don't understand the continued need to forensically reevaluate that trade here.

hitting the slopes again? hopefully he didn't wave down a cop with his shirt.... main liner
Why is the Cliff Lee trade ill fated? They traded the guy for prospects, who may or may not pan out, and then resigned him a year later. What part of that is ill fated? aintnorep- it's ill-fated because we should have gotten better prospects, duh. we traded an ace... we should have gotten at least 1 and maybe 2 guys that are already helping us.
leeal02 - Yes...we COULD have gotten more from the Yankees, Red Sox, etc..., but the risk would have been those teams would have had time and resources to re-sign him.

Strike three. Release him tomorrow. drbob1
maybe it's considered "ill-fated" because they received next to nothing for Cliff Lee and some of us perhaps believe they could have doen better.
Our GM rushed him out of town and sold him (Lee) to the first buyer. There was no attempt to even shop him and Lee was coming off a terrific season and a fabulous Playoffs. But the GM was working fast, and wanted/needed to sell (fool the fans) the trade as part of a 3-team deal bringing Halladay here, and sending Lee away to complete the deal.
The GM knew he was misleading his fans and the media was complicit the whole way.
Other than all of this, the deal was terrific, no doubt about it. advantasux- Well said.
