Brian Schneider's three-run homer off Rick Porcello was the big hit in a four-run second inning, and Joe Blanton pitched five innings in the Phillies' 5-3 win against the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium.

Blanton gave up runs in the second and third innings. He loaded the bases in the second, but limited the damage by getting Brennan Boesch to hit into a run-scoring double play. With the bases loaded in the third, he again held the Tigers to a Magglio Ordonez sacrifice fly.

Blanton worked quickly, allowing five hits and two walks, while striking out three. Ryan Madson and J.C. Romero each followed with scoreless innings.

The Phillies got their first run on a Ross Gload single that scored Raul Ibanez, who had doubled to open the inning. Delwyn Young had to hold at second base on the play, but came around along with Gload on Schneider's second homer of the spring - a high fly into the Tigers' bullpen in right field.

The Phillies added their final run in the seventh, when Jeff Larish homered to left field off lefty Duane Below.

On a day that Phillies' brass addressed Chase Utley's injury status, prospective fill-in Wilson Valdez started at second base and went 1-for-4.

Right fielder Ben Francisco stayed back in Clearwater. He was a game-time scratch Tuesday with a stiff neck.

Carlos Ruiz also was given the day off.

The Phillies (7-6) welcome the Yankees back to Clearwater Thursday at 1:05 p.m., with Roy Halladay scheduled to go against C.C. Sabathia.
