Some Phillies among baseball's highest salaries
Matt Mullin
How many times have you watched a baseball game and seen a player dog it down to first? Or play a ball off his hip, a la Roger Dorn in Major League? Inevitably, you say to yourself, "These guys are getting paid millions of dollars to play a game! I'd do it for a lot less money, and play a lot harder!"
Ready to get really mad? While you sit in your cubicle slaving away, take a minute to see just how much these guys are getting paid to "play" baseball for a living. The Associated Press released a list of of 448 MLB players who, as of opening day, will earn more than $1 million this season.
According to the AP, "figures were obtained by The Associated Press from management and player sources and include salaries and pro-rated shares of signing bonuses and other guaranteed income. For some players, parts of salaries deferred without interest are discounted to reflect present-day values."

Thoughts? Concerns?
The world is really NUTS!! philsfansince1946
Joey Votto? Isn't he now #2 with an outrageous 25 million/year deal? kjuggs77- Joey Votto makes $9.5M this season. Followed by $17M, $12M, and $14M each of the next 3 seasons. Then it jumps to $20-25M the rest of the deal, according to baseball-reference.com ...
BTW, Blanton, Polanco, Wiggington making more than Carlos Ruiz is a crime, regardless of when they signed their deals. How in the world is Ty Wiggington making more than Chooch?!?!?! I got ya- they all make too much anyway, but sheesh. kjuggs77
I have never heard of a case where you regrew cartlidge by exercises?? tulsaphil
disgusting that men - playing a girl's game - get paid anything like that much ! the_chief
Speaking of girl's games...'the chieif' is busy in his mom's basement making cookies with his Easy-Bake Oven... Buck Dharma
Vernon Wells number 2? Or should that read Albert Pujols? jweinstein14
It's a killer having $35 million on the DL. They'll probably regret Howard's contract for the next 5 years. AvoidSundanceVacations
Imagine what the owners are making. What some people forget is these guys are just like any other top entertainers. I'm glad they're getting their cut. TomO
Um, Papelbon? He makes $11,000,058 this year. Now the question is who needs to hire an editor, philly.com or the AP. Lance Nix at $1.15M is also misssing. pretzalz
Where is UTELY? Seal Rock
Utely is # 32. johnny eagle
More illuminating is how much players get paid per unit. Examples: Lee=$6,515/pitch he makes, Papelbon=$13,333/pitch he makes, Howard=$7,142/pitch he sees and $6,600/play in the field, Thome=$5,680/at bat, Ruiz=$216/pitch he sees at the plate or behind it. All figures are based on average times each even occurs per game. calm weather
