Phillies add another pitcher

THE INVENTORY of pitchers that will be participating for big-league jobs this spring grew by one on Monday, when Phillies general manager Matt Klentak claimed another off waivers.

Righthander Michael Mariot was claimed off waivers from the Kansas City Royals, becoming the fifth pitcher Klentak has added since taking over as GM at the end of October.

The 27-year-old Mariot, who went 4-2 with a 2.32 ERA in 42 relief appearances at Triple A Omaha, joins rotation-lock Jeremy Hellickson (trade), fellow righthanders Dan Otero and A.J. Achter (both also claimed off waivers) and lefthanded reliever James Russell (minor league signing) as newcomers who will head to Clearwater, Fla., with the Phillies in February.

Mariot, a 6-foot righthander, appeared in two games for the World Champion Royals in 2015 and had a 6.48 ERA in 17 appearances out of Kansas City's bullpen in 2014. He racked up strikeouts at Triple A Omaha in 2015, with 72 in 62 innings and sported a healthy 4.50 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

The Phillies currently have 38 players on their 40-man roster.
