Oh baby! Toronto fans worse than Philly's

Police arrest man who threw can of beer from upper deck in Toronto that splashed on an infant below.

AFTER WHAT happened at the Blue Jays game Wednesday night, maybe, just maybe, Philadelphians will shake their undeserved reputation as the worst fans in sports.

Sure we threw snowballs at Santa Claus and batteries at J.D. Drew. And yes, we cheered when Michael Irvin was taken off the field on a stretcher at the Vet.

But we never, ever, sprayed a baby with beer . . . unintentionally or otherwise.

That's exactly what someone did at the Rogers Centre Wednesday night in Toronto.

It all started in the seventh inning when Blue Jays catcher Russell Martin's throw to the mound deflected off Rangers batter Shin-Soo Choo, allowing the tiebreaking run to score in the seventh inning in Game 5 of American League Division Series.

Toronto fans littered the field with debris, including beer cans, causing an 18 minute delay. At one point, a fan from the upper deck threw a can that narrowly missed a mother and her a baby. The beer inside, however, splashed the child.

Police arrested Albert Grummitt, 33, of Caistor Centre, Ontario and charged him with mischief. He was released and has a Nov. 24 court date.

The Blue Jays went on to win the game to advance to an NLCS meeting against the Royals.

Mario Coutinho, the Blue Jays' vice president of stadium operations and security told the Toronto Star that the team will review its security and discuss the sale of canned beer at the stadium.

But don't expect dry games.

"I think you look back to 81 home games this season and we haven't had those situations before," Coutinho told the Star Thursday. "I think, like I said, it was more of an emotional reaction, not something that was a result of the sale of alcohol.

Coutinho said about 30 fans were ejected for throwing things onto the field.

Whatever.

All we know is that GQ and other publications had better not continue to pick Philly as having the worst fans in sports.

Toronto just moved to the top of the list.
