Phillies Notes: Brown's healthy, but he sits again

This was the ninth straight game in which Phillies leftfielder Domonic Brown wasn't in the starting lineup. Earlier it was because of tonsillitis, but now he says he is healthy.

He made his last start July 29 in a 6-0 win over the Mets in New York. After that he was weakened, the second time in a month he felt that way. Tonsillitis was later diagnosed.

Since his last start, Brown has appeared in six games, making six plate appearances.

"I am good now, man," Brown said before the game Friday at Citizens Bank Park. "I feel pretty much 100 percent."

The outfield has been playing well. Grady Sizemore entered the game hitting .333 and Ben Revere was at .311. Marlon Byrd has been a season-long fixture in right.

"Grady is playing pretty good, Ben is swinging a pretty good bat, and I know Byrd-man will be there pretty much every day," Brown said. "I am pretty much waiting around."

Coming off a three-game sweep of the Houston Astros, Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said he wanted to keep the status quo.

"I didn't want to mess with something going good either," Sandberg said. "[Brown] gets another day of batting practice under his belt."

An all-star last year, Brown, who turns 27 next month, entered Friday batting .229 with seven home runs, 50 RBIs, and a .615 OPS. He hit .268 with a .715 OPS in July, his best monthly totals in those categories this season.

Former Phillies manager Charlie Manuel, who guided the team to five consecutive playoff appearances and the 2008 World Series title, will be inducted onto the team's Wall of Fame before the game Saturday night.

Manuel was 780-636 (.551) while managing the Phillies from 2005 to 2013. Counting his time with the Cleveland Indians, his career record is 1,000-826.

Aaron Nola, the Phillies' first-round draft choice from LSU who enjoyed a strong debut on Wednesday for double-A Reading, will make his next start Tuesday at Harrisburg.

Nola beat that same Harrisburg team, 9-2, on Wednesday, allowing one earned run in five innings.

Lehigh Valley third baseman Maikel Franco and Williamsport lefthander Brandon Leibrandt are the Phillies' minor-league players of the month for July.

Franco batted .343 with four home runs, 23 RBIs, and a .967 OPS.

Leibrandt went 2-1 with a 1.42 ERA over six games split between the Gulf Coast League Phillies and short-season Williamsport.

A sixth-round pick from Florida State, Leibrandt struck out 36 and walked six in 312/3 innings.
